New approach to water treatment

Category

Cleantech, Environment, Water Technologies, Biofiltration

Development Stage

Technology demonstrated in aquariums of up to 200 liters where nitrate accumulation was successfully controlled

Highlights

  • Technology reduces high nitrate levels in both fresh-water and sea-water.
  • Improves water quality for wide range of aquarium fish and extends their life expectancy.
  • Improves quality of nitrate-contaminated surface and ground waters.
  • Bacteria in the presence of a carbon source reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas over extended periods.
  • Application in water-purification systems for aquariums and nitrate-contaminated bodies of water.

Our Innovation

Water filters with denitrifying bacteria immobilized in novel polymer carrier beads for the removal of nitrates from water. Permeable polymer beads containing either denitrifying bacteria or a combination of fermentative and denitrifying bacteria plus a carbon source reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas; technology superior to existing nitrate removal systems.

Key Features

  • Non-pathogenic purifying bacteria
  • Effective in both freshwater and seawater
  • Denitrifying activity sustained over an extended period of at least several months
  • Carriers can be adapted to custom requirements; shelf life of the dry preparation—years

Development Milestones

  • Seeking opportunity to license the technology and funding to up-scale pilot set up

The Opportunity

  • Increasing international concern and more stringent environmental requirements over nitrate contamination of surface and ground waters are driving the need for improved technologies for groundwater and drinking water treatment.
