  • The Forensic Chemistry Laboratory focuses on developing new and  improved tools using chemical methods to solve crimes and furnish courts of law with scientific evidence

Research provided

  • Development of latent fingerprint visualization techniques through improved reagents and instrumentation: In particular, providing colored or luminescent impressions via more sensitive "mapping" of the amino acids and lipids that are present in small amounts in fingerprint deposits
  • Advanced techniques for detection and identification of explosives such as the preparation of novel color reagents for the chemical detection of explosives.
  • Highly refined field tests for crime-scene examination, including
  • Shooter detection (color and fluorescence techniques)
  • Enhancement of faint contact impressions such as shoe prints, tire prints, and indented writing


  • The Forensic Chemistry Laboratory has highly skilled, knowledgeable researchers utilizing and developing state-of-the-art equipment and technologies
